Typography Within the Brand System
A logo does not exist in isolation. Color palettes, isotypes, illustrations, and patterns form a system that works together to communicate a specific promise. Within this system, the logo’s responsibility is to be recognizable and memorable, while typography provides an additional semiotic layer that enriches its personality.
When we develop a brand from scratch, there is greater freedom, but a heavier responsibility: its initial interactions will be foundational to building its meaning. In this context, typographic choices can help establish from the outset the connotations we wish to craft around the name.
On the other hand, when working with an established name, the strategic starting point is different. Typography engages in a dialogue with everything the public already thinks they know about the brand, thereby transforming pre-existing interpretations.
